We’ve all heard the phrase “bread of life” in Scripture. It is a powerful symbol of God’s gift of eternal life. But did you know that modern science has revealed a deeper meaning of this phrase? Today, we are diving into how the DNA of wheat—the very ingredient of bread—mirrors the nature of God in a way that only the Creator could design.
What Does Science Show About Bread in the Bible?
This new, scientific revelation totally coincides with the Bible! When we take into consideration what we eat, having insight from the Bible provides great confidence in what we’re putting into our bodies.
God’s light should shine into every area of our life, and the living bread He provides is just one way he reveals this amazing truth to us; PRAISE is the first word that comes to my mind when hearing about this, and I’m sure you will have a similar experience with this lovely truth.
Understanding the Importance of Bread in the Bible and In our Lives has brought me such sweet joy, and I know it will for you too. What an amazing God we have!
What you are about to read is God’s truth, in even the smallest details of His design. Not only in us, but also within the food He designed for us to eat. Food excites me, and God revealing Himself within it makes it that much more invigorating.
I love food, but HE is the ultimate Living Bread of our lives.
Be ready to be amazed!
Why Is the DNA of Food Important?
Have you ever wondered about the DNA within the food you eat? DNA makes up every living organism in God’s creation.
God designed DNA to self replicate. With this genetic code, humans reproduce humans, animals reproduce animals, and plants reproduce plants. What’s fascinating is that DNA was once thought to be genetic junk, but it’s now realized to be far more complex than we could have imagined.
There’s an incredible amount of wisdom and intricacy in DNA.
Even scientists are now having a hard time denying the perfect design by an intelligent creator. Within our scriptures, we know that God had—and has—a master plan for His perfect creation.
Today though, I want to focus on the DNA within food, which helps us to see just how perfect God’s design really is. We will see specifically how God’s design for the food we eat shows up in bread.
Food continuously amazes me. When I learned cruciferous vegetables represent the Cross, I felt like God reached down and lifted me off the ground with enthusiasm. In my personal experience, food is one of the most enjoyable ways to see how the light of God’s word reveals itself. And it all works together for our health!
Decoding the Secrets of Plant DNA
Not only is God’s message and love for us reflected on the outside of His creation, but also from deep within. For years—decades really—man has been working studiously to microscopically understand the DNA of food.
You see, there’s a whole process that comes with understanding food’s DNA:
Learn the DNA – change the DNA – control the crops – control the people.
We see it happening in the grocery stores and at the dinner table. People’s beliefs and lack-of-understanding of the food they eat leads to extreme views and contention.
There is a growing struggle for people to find nutritious food, food that works for the health of our bodies rather than against. With sugar loaded into almost everything we eat, it’s difficult to find real bread we don’t have to feel guilty about eating! Even then, many still struggle with food sensitivities such as celiac disease, which make it that much harder to break bread with confidence their food won’t make them feel bad.
But science and the Bible, working together, provide clarity on our daily food, which God has given to us.
Scientists have worked hard to decode DNA in plants; understanding DNA opens new doors for crop productivity and pesticide developments. Only time and lots of work and research could lead to these incredible discoveries, shedding light on this mystery of the world.
The Science of Wheat: Complexity Beyond Comparison
In 2002, scientists decoded the rice genome. By 2009, they mapped maize. But wheat was different. Wheat studies were complicated because wheat has one of the most complex genomes known to science. (Source)
Wheat is an important crop in God’s Word, but not only is it important in reference to what the Bible says about Jesus being our living bread, it is incredibly important in daily life, health, and, perhaps shockingly, politics.
Scientists will say that wheat is arguably the most critical crop in the world. It is grown on more land than anything else (even without man’s intervention). Wheat provides humanity with a fifth of our calories, making it vital for most people’s daily nutrition. (Source)
It makes up flour, meaning it’s in your bread, your pastries, your pasta.
Bread in the Bible is used to understand God’s love for us, teachings for us to live by, tells us a lot about God’s chosen people, and has great insight into our Lord Jesus Christ. Food brought people together—family, friends, and neighbors—and was included in numerous celebrations, where people convened to break bread together. Our Lord Jesus even compares Himself to our Daily Bread.
Why is Wheat’s DNA Special?
So why did it take so long to unravel the DNA of wheat? If wheat holds such importance to our everyday life, shouldn’t they have wanted to uncover the secrets in its DNA that much quicker? Well, that is most likely exactly the reason they persevered in studying it. But they quickly found that wheat has one of the most complex genomes known to science.
Here is what scientists discovered about this grain:
For a start, wheat’s genome is monstrously big, especially in comparison to other grains.
It is massive and complex, truly a “living bread!”
Wheat DNA Vs. Human Genome
Here is a comparison:
- Arabidopsis: 135 million DNA letters.
- Human Genome: 3 billion DNA letters.
- Bread Wheat: 16 billion DNA letters! (Source)
This is phenomenal!
But wait, that IS great—but not the reason for this article. Grab the butter; there’s more. Just one of wheat’s chromosomes—3B—is bigger than the entire soybean genome. Here it is—open the oven…
How Wheat Confirms Jesus is the Bread of Life
Modern wheat is hexaploid. This means it has three pairs of every chromosome—three completely different ancestral genomes combined into one grain (Source).
Three in one. Does that sound familiar?
It perfectly mirrors the Holy Trinity. Just as God is three-in-one, the Bread of Life (wheat) carries a “three-in-one” signature in its very DNA!
Check out the video below to see further how new wheat research confirms “Bread of Life” is a Perfect Picture.
No matter the reason why scientists were searching for the complete revelation of the wheat DNA, God revealed HIMSELF instead!
Food amazes me! And these sweet-as-honey truths show me just how much God designed the world for our benefit. Right down to the food we eat!
What Does the Bible Say About the Bread of Life
Here are key verses where Jesus refers to Himself as the bread:
- John 6:35: “Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger…'”
- John 6:51: “I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever…”
- John 6:48: “I am the bread of life.”
From these verses, straight out of the Bible, we can see Jesus means to tell us much about bread and how it relates to His gift of eternal life.
Jesus said “I am the bread of life,” indicating just how important this is to us as Christians! We can see the depth of this meaning in our relationship with bread today, which this research supports.
Is Wheat Healthy? A Spiritual and Physical Perspective
Wheat is more than what it seems to be—something you eat to satisfy your craving or to fill you up. Food is not just something you consume to receive nutrients that nourish your body. When you eat bread, you are not just filled up, physically satisfied, and nourished, you are also spiritually learning how to be satisfied in God’s grace. It nourishes our soul!
Not only does wheat offer nutrition when we eat bread, it offers a greater understanding of our Lord Jesus Christ’s role as living bread in our lives.
Though sometimes the bread we find in this world is loaded with things that are not healthy for our body or soul, there are many ways we can bake bread WITH the health benefits our Lord had in store for us.
You can find How to Make Healthy Bread here.
With grains good for our body, mind, soul (and taste buds!), we can truly enjoy how bread is healthy for us inside and out, experiencing the bread of life in our everyday lives and health.
This is more than Biblical facts, it’s scientific fact. How fascinating it is to realize that with every time we eat bread, we receive the true bread of life, our Lord Jesus.
So, whether you try your hand at some Honey Whole Wheat bread or make some classic Unleavened Bread, you can remember that wheat represents God’s design for the world and His great love for us!
What Does God Say About the Food We Eat?
Learning more about food and understanding how some foods we eat bring us closer to God is such a beautiful realization. We can taste the sweet word He gives us through the bread in the Bible.
I am awed by the fact that there is indeed a strong correlation between Scripture and research about wheat and the true bread.
It really inspires people to be more aware of the food they eat and look into the health benefits of what they are putting into their body. With knowing God’s strong intention in the food and drink provided to us in this world, we can live one of the most important parts of life, knowing that it is by Jesus’ example we eat and drink and partake in our daily bread.
When we eat bread, real bread, we can be constantly reminded of Jesus Christ and the opportunity for eternal life He has offered us.
Frequently Asked Questions About the Bread of Life
Q: What does Jesus mean when He says “I am the Bread of Life”?
A: In John 6:35, Jesus uses this metaphor to explain that He is the source of spiritual sustenance. Just as physical bread sustains the body, Jesus sustains the soul. He is offering eternal life and a relationship with God that satisfies our deepest spiritual hunger, unlike physical food which only satisfies us temporarily.
Q: What is the connection between wheat DNA and the Trinity?
A: Modern science has discovered that wheat is “hexaploid,” meaning its genome is actually three distinct genomes combined into one. This “three-in-one” biological structure serves as a beautiful illustration of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit)—three distinct persons in one God.
Q: Where in the Bible does it talk about the Bread of Life?
A: The primary teaching is found in the New Testament in the Gospel of John, Chapter 6. Key verses include John 6:35, John 6:48, and John 6:51. In the Old Testament, the “manna” from heaven (Exodus 16) is seen as a foreshadowing of Jesus as the true Bread.
Q: Is wheat considered healthy in the Bible?
A: Yes. In Scripture, wheat and bread are often viewed as symbols of God’s provision, blessing, and abundance (Psalm 81:16). While modern processed wheat can lack nutrients, whole grains as God designed them are filled with fiber and nutrients meant to nourish the body.
